Dean joined McEwen Gisvold as an associate in 1966 and has been a partner with McEwen Gisvold since 1972. Dean offers forty years of professional expertise in real estate, real estate finance and commercial law. He is included in Woodward/White, Inc.’s The Best Lawyers in America, a peer-created directory of outstanding attorneys, and in Chambers USA America's Leading Lawyers for Business. He is also a 20-year member of the prestigious American College of Real Estate Lawyers, a national organization of leading real estate attorneys.

Representative Transactions
Since 1994, Dean has been lead counsel in the documentation and closings of numerous sales and acquisitions of office buildings, shopping centers, and industrial space for state pension funds, aggregating over one billion dollars. He has also acted as local counsel for the negotiation and closing of a timber loan of $250,000,000 involving property in four states. McEwen Gisvold was local counsel for Oregon and Washington, which included secured timber property in seven Oregon counties and eight Washington counties. McEwen Gisvold participated extensively with in-house and lead counsel in San Francisco in structuring the transaction and remedies in the event of default.

Professional & Community Activities
Dean is dedicated to professional and community development. For his volunteerism, Dean has been honored with the George Russill Community Service Award. He is an active member of the Multnomah County, Oregon State, and American Bar Associations and of several organizations specializing in real estate, including the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the Lender’s Counsel Group, the American Land Title Association and the Oregon State Bar’s section on Real Estate and Land Use. Dean is Board Chair of Central City Concern, a nonprofit corporation providing affordable housing and other services, and a founding Board Member of the Network for Oregon Affordable Housing, a statewide consortium of banks with offices in Oregon.

Dean's history of community leadership includes his service as President of the Irvington Community Association, Chair of the Portland Public Schools Board of Education, Chair of the Multnomah County Library Advisory Board, and Chair of the Downtown Plan Advisory Committee, whose work was nationally recognized with the Rudy Bruner Award for excellence in urban planning.

Dean is also a noted author and speaker on real estate law. His most recent contributions include:
